Best Audio is the exclusive designer and manufacturer of this re-engineered TK14 sled. Sellers from China are not authorized to use the name Best Audio, our product description, or images. Unfortunately they are doing this, and more unfortunately, there is no way to stop them from wholesaling their product to eBay resellers. While Best Audio cannot stop Chinese firms from copying us, please remember that purchasing from an eBay reseller who has copied our design only encourages more of the same. Now to the description of the Best Audio sled … Counterfeit sleds have a brass spring inside the signal pin – this is a sound killer. Why is a gold plated internal spring the best? It’s the science of electrical conductivity, and the pureness of the audio signal as it travels from the stylus to your ears. Below are metals ranked in terms of their conductivity of electrons, and relative to the most widely used metal, which is of course, copper. Silver – 105% conductivityCopper – 100% conductivityGold – 70% conductivity – Best Audio uses a gold plated internal spring on the signal pinAluminum – 61% conductivity – Dual used an aluminum spring pin in the original productBrass – 28% conductivity – Chinese manufactured sleds/pins (and resold in the USA and Europe thru eBay) use a brass spring As you can see, brass is the worst material on the conductivity list, and is why you never will find brass in audio cables. A cartridge sled with an internal brass spring defeats the purpose of any gold plating because the signal is degraded along the path of the pin. At a minimum, the original Dual aluminum pins were twice as pure as brass loaded pins. Our sled is of a higher conductivity that the original Dual sled, and more than twice the purity of a counterfeit. Best Audio uses only gold plated internal springs on our signal pins. As our company logo says, “Hear the Quality”. In a blind test we sent our cartridge sleds, as well as some counterfeits, to audiophiles. The results were clear: Brass is the worst sound conductor. Knowing that the metals are critical to audio quality, here are our specs: The Best Audio sled used gold plated pins with interior gold plated springs. The spring is plated with 10 micro inches of gold (per ASTM 488, Type 1, Code C) over nickel. Other sellers cannot quote this spec. In short, lower quality and often non-American made pins use brass internal springs (a sound killer) and display overall worse electrical and mechanical performance and reliability. Engineered to provide more options than the classic TP60 headshell, our versatile design allows for top mounting, or bottom mounting, of your cartridge. The injection molded headshell has versatile cartridge mounting slots , and is designed to hold an M2.5 or M3 nut if mounting from below, and can accommodate screw sizes between M2 and M3 if mounting from the top. And we kept the instantly recognizable look of the Thorens original. We ship custom made brass slot nuts and screws size M2.5. A non-branded hardware cover (metal badge) ships with the headshell, it can be affixed with a dab of silicone gel or double sided tape if you prefer to cover the mounting hardware. We think the headshell looks striking in an open architecture, exposing the screws – especially if using brass, gold/silver plate, or stainless steel mounting hardware. Examine our product photos closely to see the incredibly sharp detail, and smooth texture – carefully designed to complement your table. Notice the reflection of the audio pins against the champagne plastic. Standard on all of our sled and headshells are permanently sealed gold plated spring pins for a pure audio signal, silver plated stranded copper wires with color matching insulation “to the tips”, and solid copper split-barrel clips. To attenuate any sound killing audio interference and/or hum, our cartridge sled has a solid copper EMI shield extending up the sides of the cart sled like the Dual original. We can’t help but notice another seller literally cut corners with respect to this original feature and he left the interior sides exposed. We matched the shield’s material weight and physical dimension to the original Dual engineering design. But why use copper? Although more expensive to source than the stamped brass seen on other pieces, our etched copper also acts as an RFI shield. Why shield against radio waves? Because homes are surrounded by the radio waves we call Wi-Fi, not to mention your cellphone is actually a sophisticated radio – every incoming text or email is a beamed radio wave transmission. Most homes are bombarded with both electromagnetic and radio waves, and we’ve neutralized both. In this regard, the Dual engineers were ahead of their time with respect to shielding, and we recreated their design with a higher grade material. The problem with 3D printed parts: 3D prints make for good prototypes, but are not suited for finished products. 3D prints cannot match the fine details found in our injection molded parts, and they do not age well as the porous plastic absorbs moisture. In addition to material deficiency, 3D prints cast a purplish hue due to the dyes used in the printing process. Our injection molded sled, complete with the center vertical line, blends smoothly with the other components of your classic turntable keeping your system as authentic as possible.
